The biggest news of the year is that after extensive knee surgery (and I suspect a little tuck here and there) and a 7 month lay-off (leg-over??), Paul Roberts returned to the squash courts to remind us that he can hit the ball very hard – we were all jolly impressed… – apart from Vijoy who just couldn’t handle any more magnificence….
The first tournament of the year was the Tanglin Doubles Tournament – the Presidents Cup in January. We manged to field a few teams Fred/Ross, Kim (traitor/someone from Tanglin Club), Ivan/James and Colin/Gus. Results were mixed, the chicken curry was good, the beer was cold. We forgot to take photos (only Fred and Ross getting hammered by a couple of ladies…) except for one photo of the 6 expresso margaritas that Chris Leung had on his farewell outing in February… (he has left us for Dubai – hopefully temporarily).
The Singapore National Squash League (NSL) started in April. We managed to muster 3 teams; D Grade, E Grade and Vets II (D/E Grade). Last year we had an additional team in C Grade but unfortunately but we lost a number of our higher ranked players and could not make up the numbers. In 2016, we had a Vets I team (which we won) but some gerrymandering of the team mix by the NSL meant we could no longer be competitive and we had to withdraw. However, having 3 teams is pretty impressive, let us hope for good results. The NSL continues until end July.
On 17 March we also had our first InterClub social of the year (someone foolishly called it a friendly, but on the squash court we have no friends…) against the British Club at home. It was right down to the wire with the last 3 matches being 3-2 in HC favour for a team win of 8-6 (we told those silly English knights…). It was followed by a lengthy re-hydration session and late-night entertainment of England being put to the sword by the Irish in the 6 Nations rugby….
A few folks went up to Bangkok for Cheng Mai Jumbo Doubles Tournament in April. These were Fred/Colin R, Daniel/Kim and Ross/Darcy (TC). Success should be measured by experience gained rather than mere baubles and trophies…
The National Squash League is well underway with around 20 members playing in Main League Grade D, Main League Grade E and Veterans Division II. All teams are sitting around the middle of the orders at the half-way point of end-May. The league will finish mid-end July.
