The beginning of the school year is an exciting time for children and their families. As a naturopathic doctor and mother, I‘m passionate about working with my patients to support their family’s mental and physical well-being. In this article, I highlight immune supports that best help your child during their busy school year.
“Mom, I don’t Feel So Good”
As parents we all know what it’s like to be woken up in the middle of the night by a sick child. So what can you do to prevent illness or reduce the length of one? I often recommend supplementing with immune supporting vitamins and herbal medicine that can give children an extra boost to keep them healthy throughout their school year. Do keep in mind its important to consult with a doctor, naturopathic or otherwise, on the appropriate dose for your child’s age.
Sometimes, we don’t start thinking of our child’s immune system until they start falling sick. I always recommend that parents should start building their children’s immunity before school starts. My top supplements for the immune system include zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D3, and probiotics. All have been shown to safely and efficiently reduce incidence of viruses, runny noses, ear infections and the need for antibiotic prescriptions.
Botanical medicine can be incredibly helpful in supporting a child’s immunity. In young kids, pharmaceutical medications for cold, cough and pain have been shown to be a leading cause for adverse reactions, so its important we look at gentler approaches to preventing common illnesses. The most studied immune herbs for kids include elderberry, echinacea and Andrographis. Formulations for children are typically in a powder form or in a liquid glycerite tincture.
Let’s give our kids the best start to the school year they can have, with great energy and a strong immune system. Naturopathic medicine can be an excellent tool for your kids’ wellness for a healthy and a happy school year.
