Interview with Miss Belén Carazo

Give us a short intro of yourself (who you are, single/family member)

I moved to Singapore in January with my family. I have two teenage children, a daughter and a son. Both me and my husband work for an American company here.

Why did you move to Singapore?

Both my husband and I were relocated by the company we work for. It is not the first time we have had an international assignment. We’re originally from Spain and moved first to Geneva, Switzerland in 2007. After almost 10 years in Geneva, it’s Singapore!

We know that it’s not easy to settle down in a new country. What are the tips you could give to others that made it easy for you?

I try to connect to people who I know are currently living, or who used to live, in the country I’m moving to. I learn and get a lot of tips from them especially on things like where to live, schools, lifestyle etc. Also, I find it easier to reach out to friends of friends, and make new local friends through them.

When did you join the Club and what was the reason for you to do so?

I joined in March. Before moving to Singapore, I was introduced by a French friend of mine who is a member of the Hollandse Club. When I got here, I started to look around for social clubs that best suit my preference. We love the familiar atmosphere in the Club and also the fact that it is very well located to where we live.

What’s your favourite thing about living here?

Apart from the safe and secure factor in Singapore, I love the diversity of culture here. I always feel welcomed, and the locals are very helpful and friendly. It makes it easier for me to adapt to the new living culture here.

Did the Club help you meet people and integrate into your new home?

Definitely! Coincidentally, people that I met outside are also members of the Hollandse Club and because of the diversity of the Club Members here, I truly embraced the entire experience during my time here.

What habits have you found most strange about Singapore culture?

Coming from a European country like Switzerland, where all shops are mostly closed way early, I still find it amazing that there are so many shops and eateries here that are open 24 hours! And I definitely love the outdoor way of living here!

What advice would you give other expats?

I find it really helpful and beneficial to join a social club especially when you have children. This is a great way for them to interact and meet other children and their families from different countries and also locals. Diversity is something I really value, and I find it in Hollandse Club where there is a great balance between different nationalities.
